Sargent Cypress
The Clark Road Project has a very special tree on site very close to areas where slope
deforestation and excavation are proposed in the Draft EIR. The tree is growing next to the Clark creek
drainage, adjacent to the trail leading to the EBRPD entrance gate. We discovered
this tree has been listed as the largest Sargent Cypress tree in the United States by the
California Register of Big Trees . The site coordinator estimated that this tree is approximately 150 years old, which would
indicate that it may have begun sprouting during the gold rush era. We all need to be aware of its significance. A tree of
this age and renown needs to be protected to the best of our abilities.
The Sargent Cypress is on private property; the trail to the ridge is an EBRPD right of way. In response to
several acts of vandalism, one on the ranchers has posted No Trespassing signs on some trees that border the road.
We must respect the rights of those leasing the land for grazing and refrain from harassing livestock, trampling
down fences and leaving gates open.
